We Are HologicThe Women's Health CompanyFounded in 1985, Hologic, Inc. (NASDAQ: HOLX) has grown to become a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of premium diagnostic products, medical imaging systems, and surgical products created specifically to address the healthcare needs of women throughout the world. Our comprehensive suite of products spans nine key areas: mammography and breast biopsy; radiation treatment for early-stage breast cancer; cervical cancer screening; treatment for menorrhagia; permanent contraception; osteoporosis assessment; preterm birth risk assessment; mini C-arms for extremity imaging; as well as molecular diagnostic products, including human papillomavirus (HPV) testing and reagents for a variety of DNA and RNA analysis applications. Our core business units are focused on breast health, diagnostics, GYN surgical, and skeletal health. The complex health issues facing women today deserve and demand the singular dedication of a passionate company committed to doing everything in its power to help women live longer, stronger, healthier lives. We are proud of the difference we have made in women's lives for nearly 25 years and recognize the responsibility that our leadership position brings. Here's how we have been able to fulfill that responsibility to have a tremendous positive impact on the health of women worldwide. Breast HealthAt Hologic, our focus and concentration on breast cancer is unparalleled. No other major healthcare company devotes a higher percentage of its resources to the development and deployment of screening, diagnostic and therapeutic technologies to meet the diverse challenges of this disease. As a result, radiologists, breast surgeons, radiation oncologists, and related healthcare professionals alike have come to rely on our continued advancements in digital mammography, biopsy technologies, and radiation-focused breast conservation therapy. Our Selenia® digital mammography systems and SecurView® diagnostic workstations are leading the industry as breast centers and other healthcare facilities transition from an analog to digital environment. More than a single technology, Selenia digital mammography represents an integrated suite of technological firsts, propelling the science of breast cancer detection forward. Our SecurView workstations provide R2™ computer-aided detection, a sophisticated tool to help clinicians detect cancer at its earliest stage. For the comfort of patients, our MammoPad® breast cushion, a soft foam pad designed to help minimize discomfort during a screening mammography, helps women relax and enables technologists to get the best possible image. If a suspicious lesion is detected, we support the next clinical steps. Specifically, our ATEC®, Eviva™ and Celero® breast biopsy systems, coupled with the MultiCare® Platinum prone biopsy table and StereoLoc® II upright biopsy platform, are designed to facilitate highly precise, image-guided procedures under minimally invasive conditions and provide compassionate care for every woman facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Should cancer be detected in its early stage, many women are candidates for the Hologic MammoSite® five-day targeted radiation therapy system, a unique and welcomed clinical option. Our next generation MammoSite ML multi-lumen brachytherapy applicator gives radiation oncologists the ability to shape the radiation dose for typical cases and treat patients who are otherwise not appropriate candidates for traditional brachytherapy. One area receiving a great deal of attention in the medical press is our advancements in breast tomosynthesis technology. Tomosynthesis makes it possible to obtain three-dimensional images of the breast and to view one slice at a time by removing the images of the overlying and underlying tissues that confuse an ordinary breast x-ray. The greater clarity of the resulting image is expected to deliver important clinical benefits, such as increasing the breast cancer detection rate and decreasing the number of false positives that result in unnecessary and emotionally stressful callbacks for additional examinations. Selenia® Dimensions™, our breast tomosynthesis offering, is commercially available in Europe, Canada and other countries, with FDA approval in the U.S. pending. Throughout the developed worlds, our breast cancer screening solutions and interventional therapies are the preferred choice for large numbers of physicians, administrators and technologists. Beyond that, as an extension of our global commitment to women's health, we are supporting programs in Tanzania, Nicaragua, Thailand, South Africa, and other countries by providing outright contributions of Hologic equipment. Through our philanthropy, many women are receiving mammograms for the first time in their lives. DiagnosticsWhen it comes to diagnosing disease, we believe that women deserve a better answer. We take great pride in the screening and diagnostic capabilities that we have developed for physicians focused on prenatal and gynecological health. Our ThinPrep® technology has set new standards for cervical cancer screening - a standard that women and the medical community-at-large have come to rely on. Compared to manual screening, the ThinPrep Pap test and the ThinPrep Imaging System combine to create more accurate and comprehensive cervical cancer screening, giving added confidence in the results. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States and is recognized as the cause of most cervical cancers. To identify women most likely to develop cervical cancer and help prevent the onset of the disease, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) suggests routine Pap and HPV testing for women over the age of 30. Our Cervista™ HPV HR (high risk) screening test is designed to detect the 14 high-risk types of HPV known to cause cervical cancer. In addition, the Cervista HPV 16/18 test is the first HPV test approved for genotyping for HPV types 16 and 18, known to be associated with approximately 70 percent of all cervical cancers in the United States. Both of these HPV tests complement our ThinPrep Pap test platform for early detection of cervical cancer. Hologic molecular diagnostic reagents cover a wide variety of DNA and RNA analysis applications based on proprietary Invader® chemistry. In addition to Cervista HPV tests, our clinical diagnostic offerings using Invader chemistry test such conditions as cystic fibrosis, hepatitis C, and cardiovascular risk. A pregnant woman has special concerns: her baby's health, as well as her own health. Our fetal fibronectin test gives obstetricians/gynecologists a clear picture of preterm birth probabilities - valuable information to support any necessary treatment options for the mother. We offer a second important test for women during pregnancy called InPlex® CF. This molecular test can identify genetic mutations associated with cystic fibrosis in both the mother and her unborn child. The Cellient® automated cell block system is the first commercially available fully automated system that allows individual cells or small tissue samples to be processed for histological examination. The vacuum-assisted filtration concentrates available cells within the block. The result is diagnostically useful, high-quality blocks that are created in less than an hour and can be reviewed efficiently. Surgical HealthHologic continues to support a woman's gynecological health past her child-bearing years. NovaSure® endometrial ablation is the market-leading technology and preferred clinical procedure for treating the condition of menorrhagia. Thanks to the NovaSure system, more than 1,000,000 women have been able to dramatically improve the quality of their lives, freed from the debilitating effects of excessive menstrual bleeding. Our Adiana® system provides a form of permanent female contraception intended as an alternative to tubal ligation. The Adiana procedure is minimally invasive, requires no incisions, and using local anesthesia, can be performed in the comfort of the doctor's office. Skeletal HealthOur work in the detection of osteoporosis is one more example of our special commitment to addressing those health challenges that threaten women most severely. Roughly four in ten U.S. women over the age of 50 will experience a hip, spine, or wrist fracture sometime during the remainder of their lives. And as people live longer, the lifetime risk of fractures is expected to increase for all ethnic groups. Early detection and treatment can mean a lifetime of health and vitality for women. Osteoporosis is often a silent thief - when least expected, osteoporosis robs a woman of her vitality, her confidence and her spirit. Helping women fight this disease requires especially sensitive care from their physicians, supported by early detection and appropriate treatment to rebuild strong and healthy bones. Hologic pioneered dual x-ray bone densitometry technology, which has become the industry standard for assessing bone health. Using our Discovery™ system, clinicians can identify fractures not discernible by normal examinations. An added benefit of this technology is the growing use of the same platform to measure body composition and support the diagnosis of heart disease. Today, there is no definitive cure for osteoporosis. But we will continue to advance our state-of-the-art detection and diagnostic solutions until medical science is able to come up with definitive answers. For extremity imaging, we offer the Fluoroscan™ InSight system. This system provides ultra-fine detail imaging, additional flexibility with an extendable flat panel monitor and new imaging automation that allows the surgeon to concentrate on the patient. The system assists the surgeon in virtually all surgical procedures of the extremities and can be an excellent tool in the emergency department, as well as in private practice.
