MARLBOROUGH, Mass., (Jan 24, 2006) - Cytyc Corporation today announced that the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health (SLPH) is the first state public health laboratory to convert to the ThinPrep(R) Imaging System for all cervical cancer screening. This builds on the laboratory's use of the ThinPrep(R) Pap Test, which began in 1999. The lab currently processes approximately 110,000 Pap tests annually.

North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health provides medical and environmental laboratory services to public health organizations including county health departments. Eight of the health departments participated in a six-month study to evaluate the ThinPrep Imaging System compared to manual screening beginning in March 2005. Results indicated an increase in sensitivity and a considerable decrease in the unsatisfactory rate compared to manually screened ThinPrep Pap Test slides. The study also demonstrated cytotechnologist productivity gains and a decrease in screening hours.

The ThinPrep Imaging System is the first fully integrated, interactive computer system that assists cytotechnologists and pathologists in the primary screening and diagnosis of ThinPrep Pap Test slides. The ThinPrep Imaging System combines revolutionary imaging technology with human interpretive expertise to improve cervical cancer screening efficiency and performance.
