Hologic Marks Shipment Of Its 25th LORAD Selenia
Full Field Digital Mammography System BEDFORD, Mass. (April 17, 2003) - Hologic, Inc. (NASDAQ: HOLX) a leading provider of women's diagnostic imaging systems and state-of-the-art digital radiography systems today announced shipment of its 25th LORAD Selenia full field digital mammography system. The system was shipped to USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, a renowned cancer research and treatment facility located in Los Angeles, California. USC/Norris will use the Selenia in their Lee Breast Center, a sector of the facility designed exclusively for the detection and treatment of breast diseases. The Lee Breast Center provides a broad range of breast care patient services, including screening and risk assessment, diagnostic work-up, and treatment for early, advanced and metastatic breast cancer. Commenting on the Selenia, Dr. Yuri Parisky, Director of breast-imaging services at the USC/Norris Lee Breast Center said, "We use LORAD M-IV screen-film mammography systems with HTC® Grids exclusively in our center and have been extraordinarily pleased with the image quality and performance of these systems. Based on clinical images I have seen that were produced by the Selenia, which is built on the M-IV platform, and Hologic's track record for delivering innovative technological advances in this field, I fully expect this system to perform head and shoulders above the digital mammography technologies that have been available up until this time. Our Center is committed to delivering the highest quality care to our patient population, and we chose the Selenia because we believe it will play a key role in helping us fulfill that commitment, now and in the future." The Selenia system incorporates the Company's proprietary DirectRay® direct conversion digital image receptor manufactured by the Company's Direct Radiography division in Newark, Delaware. With this technology, amorphous selenium is used to directly convert x-rays to electronic signals, without first converting them to light, a step required by systems using indirect conversion technology. This direct conversion process preserves image sharpness by completely eliminating image degradation caused by light diffusion. The Selenia, which was cleared for marketing in the United States in October 2002, is the only FDA-approved system using this advanced direct conversion technology. Jack Cumming, Hologic's Chairman and CEO said, "We are delighted that USC/Norris has become an integral part of Hologic's drive to make our digital mammography technology available to the largest possible number of women on a worldwide basis. Since we commercially introduced the Selenia systems in the US earlier this year, we have been very pleased with the interest shown from the breast imaging community and are gratified with the level of support we've seen for this exciting technology."
