Hologic and Aloka Finalize Exclusive Agreement For Ultrasound Products

BEDFORD, Mass., and Wallingford, Conn. (November 11, 2003) - Hologic, Inc. (NASDAQ: HOLX) and Aloka Company, Ltd. today announced the signing of an agreement giving Hologic exclusive distribution rights in the United States for ultrasound products manufactured by Aloka and customized to Hologic's specifications. The agreement is for an initial term of three years, with automatic 1-year renewal options.

Under the terms of the agreement, Aloka will manufacture for Hologic, under a joint label, a high performance, fully functional diagnostic ultrasound system optimized for women's imaging, with emphasis on finding and diagnosing abnormalities within the breast. Hologic's exclusive distribution rights extend to radiology-based sales where breast-imaging systems are highly utilized, and, in addition to the ultrasound system, include compatible optional components and future technological enhancements and upgrades. The system has been designed to incorporate Aloka's proprietary ProSound package of technologically advanced features including; Digital Pure Beam imaging, Tissue Harmonic Echo technologies, 3-D Color Doppler capabilities, a 12-bit AD converter to enable higher contrast resolution, and an integrated DICOM compatible image management solution.

According to Jack Cumming, Hologic's Chairman and CEO, "This is a very important and exciting agreement for Hologic. It brings Hologic a step closer to fulfilling our commitment to provide a comprehensive portfolio of the highest quality diagnostic breast imaging products available, to assist in earlier detection of breast cancer.

"Our selection of Aloka was based on a thorough evaluation of available ultrasound technologies," continued Cumming. "Our system specifications focused on the highest image quality, a versatile feature-set, simplicity of use for technologists and physicians, and affordable pricing for women's imaging suites that are suffering from overall reimbursement pressures. We believe the system we have customized with Aloka for breast imaging is an elegant system that eclipses all of our selection criteria. In addition and most importantly, Aloka shares our passion for improving healthcare for women. We look forward to a long and productive working relationship."

Hologic's product offerings include the Lorad SeleniaT, the industry's only full field digital mammography system using direct capture technology and the M-IV and Affinity Series of screen-film mammography systems. The company also provides both upright and prone stereotactic breast biopsy systems. In addition, a recent distribution agreement with R2 Technology allows the company to offer a range of Computer Aided Detection (CAD) product offerings to be utilized with their mammography systems.

"Aloka's superior ultrasound imaging complements Hologic's high performance mammography systems and is a natural good fit in Hologic's product line, " according to Lee Oppegaard, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Aloka.

David Famiglietti, Aloka's COO, remarked, "Hologic's proven track record of delivering excellent product solutions combined with a focus on customer support parallels our customer centric approach at Aloka. This relationship will not only be good for both companies, but for customers and patients as well."
