Hologic and Suros Surgical Systems Sign Distribution Agreement For ATECT Breast Biopsy System BEDFORD, Mass., and Indianapolis, IN (November 17, 2003) - Hologic, Inc. (NASDAQ: HOLX) and Suros Surgical Systems, Inc. today announced the signing of an agreement giving Hologic non-exclusive distribution rights in the United States for the Suros automated breast biopsy and tissue excision system, the ATECT. The agreement is for an initial term of three years, with automatic 1-year renewal options. The patented ATECT system is used to obtain tissue samples during a vacuum assisted breast biopsy procedure. It is a reliable diagnostic alternative to open surgical biopsy and can obtain multiple samples through a single, small incision in the skin, under local anesthesia. Open surgical biopsy removes a larger section of tissue through a 1 - 3 inch incision, often under general anesthesia and with significantly longer recovery periods and scarring. The ATECT system is fully compatible with Hologic's stereotactic breast biopsy systems, the MultiCare Platinum and StereoLoc II, which offer advanced digital imaging to pinpoint the precise location of areas for biopsy. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to offer this leading-edge technology to physicians and their patients," said Jack Cumming, Hologic's Chairman and CEO. "Our stereotactic biopsy systems are designed to facilitate highly precise, image-guided procedures under minimally invasive conditions, while the ATECT system provides advanced technology to allow for faster, easier and more accurate sample collection than ever before. This agreement will help expand access to this valuable technology, while significantly complementing Hologic's comprehensive portfolio of products for the early detection of breast cancer and osteoporosis. We look forward to a mutually beneficial and productive relationship with our new partners at Suros." Biopsy is the most widely accepted method for definitively determining the presence or absence of cancer following detection of a breast abnormality. An estimated 1.4 million women will undergo a breast biopsy this year. The availability of stereotactic biopsy has significantly lowered the number of open surgical procedures performed over the last decade, giving women an improved and more preferred choice in diagnosing breast disease or cancer. "Our newly formed partnership with Hologic provides Suros an opportunity to expand its market reach and ability to improve patient care with a more efficient and effective breast biopsy device for both physicians and patients," said Jim Pearson, President and CEO of Suros. "When we can forge partnerships like this that get the best products in the hands of physicians who are impacting women's healthcare in communities all across the country, we know we are moving in the right direction. We are eager to begin a strong relationship with our colleagues at Hologic." About Suros
