Cytyc Reports That UK NHS Strategic Health Authority Will Adopt ThinPrep Pap Test as Exclusive New Cervical Screening Test
MARLBOROUGH, Mass., (Dec 14, 2004) - Cytyc Corporation, today reported that the Strategic Health Authority (SHA) of the National Health Service (NHS), covering Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge, United Kingdom, intends to convert all cervical screening to the ThinPrep(R) Pap Test in all eight of its laboratories. There are currently 174,000 tests processed in the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge SHA each year. This exclusive arrangement represents a potential use of approximately 800,000 ThinPrep Pap Tests over the next five years. The Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge Strategic Health Authority's Executive Team considered the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidance recommending liquid-based cytology for cervical screening and on November 15 announced that the system of choice for the SHA is the ThinPrep Pap Test. "The rationale for this decision is based on our wish to invest in a modern, highly automated system and to support the experience developed in Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital during their pilot trial" said Dr. Tony Jewell, Clinical Director and Director of Public Health for the Strategic Health Authority. "We are very proud and pleased that another large region of the UK NHS has selected the ThinPrep Pap Test for all cervical screening," said Daniel J. Levangie, Cytyc's executive vice president. "I believe our success is directly related to the proven clinical performance of our technology and the level of commitment and support provided to the NHS by the team at Cytyc UK." This decision follows similar announcements by the NHS South West, South East (East) and London Regions, as well as the decision last year by the Scottish Cervical Screening Programme to convert their cervical screening to the ThinPrep(R) System in a 5-year exclusive agreement with Cytyc UK.
