Signs and Symptoms of Breast Disease Although mammography is generally the most effective method for detecting breast cancers and other abnormalities at an early stage, it is not foolproof. In addition, mammography is not routinely performed for screening purposes until a woman reaches the age of 40. It is therefore important for women to be aware of potential signs and symptoms of breast disease and breast cancer. Women should consult their physician if they detect any of the following breast conditions:
