New Study Assesses Radiologist Performance Using Digital Mammography and Breast Tomosynthesis*
Twelve board-certified radiologists read over 300 imaging data sets in
a study to compare the cancer detection rate and screening recall rate
of conventional digital mammography versus breast tomosynthesis, a new
three-dimensional mammographic technique. The cases were drawn from a
set of over 1,000 cases gathered at five clinical sites of women that
had been imaged on both a conventional digital mammography and breast
tomosynthesis system.
An analysis of the graphical plot of the sensitivity vs. specificity
(the ROC curve) for all 12 readers found digital mammography plus
tomosynthesis imaging was superior to digital mammography alone. A mean
reduction in the patient recall rate of 43% was also observed.
The
results of the study were presented by Dr. Elizabeth Rafferty, Director
of breast Imaging- Avon Comprehensive Breast Center of the
Massachusetts General Hospital, at the Radiological Society of North
America meeting in Chicago in November.

Suros Celero Breast Biopsy Device Increases Confidence in Axillary Lymph Node Biopsy
"The
Hologic [Celero] device is one of a kind when it comes to sampling
axillary lymph nodes," says Brian Englander, MD. of Pennsylvania
Hospital. "With the ability to pre-fire the inner cannula, I am able to
control exactly where my needle goes, thereby ensuring a safe and
comfortable experience for the patient."

Ultrasound-guided biopsy of an axillary lymph node using the Celero device.
"It is my hope that the Celero device will
enable physicians who are not currently
performing pre-operative axillary lymph
node biopsies to increase their comfort level
with this procedure, as it can be a benefit
to both the physician and patient."
