Frequently Asked Questions

Q I am wondering if I have to have a registered mammography technologist during covering mammography while we wait to receive our ACR accreditation notice. Or, do I have to wait until I hire a registered mammography technologist?
A

The best advice I can give to you is to follow the guidelines set by the ACR. The qualifications state "Radiologic Technologists performing mammography must meet the qualifications in the table below. They are not required to have passed the ARRT special competency exam in mammography." This document can be found on the ACR website at the following address. Click here for document

MQSA- Required Qualifications for the Radiologic Technologist
Initial Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the American Registry of Clinical Radiologic Technologists; or licensed to perform general radiographic procedures in a state
AND
If qualified on or after April 28, 1999, have 40 hours of training in mammography, including:

. Training in breast anatomy and physiology, positioning and compression, QA/QC techniques, and imaging of patients with breast implants,
and

. 25 mammography examinations under direct supervision of an appropriate MQSA-qualified individual, and

. 8 hours of training in using any mammographic modality (e.g., digital), before beginning to use that modality independently
OR If qualified before April 28, 1999, have 40 hours of training in mammography
Continuing Experience Perform 200 mammographic examinations over a 24-month period

Q We currently use R2's CAD for our screen-film mammography cases and we are looking to go digital. We would like to stay with R2 and wonder if it is compatible with all digital mammography systems.
A

R2 ImageChecker computer aided detection (CAD) for digital mammography offers the most comprehensive CAD algorithm and supports all FDA approved digital mammography systems, which I have listed below.

When looking to calculate capacity and system performance, an evaluation of the mammography centers percentage of screening mammograms versus diagnostic procedures is a necessary step. Additionally, the acceptance of digital within the department across the entire clinical team is a must. There needs to be a level of acknowledgement that converting from screen-film will require patience as the transition occurs. Also, the understanding that initially technologists and radiologists will be going through a learning curve and that their comfort level will improve with time. As the comfort level increases so will productivity.
