In recognition of Cervical Health Awareness Month (CHAM) in January, Hologic joined with partner organizations, health care professionals and women’s health advocates to emphasize the importance of Pap + HPV screening to prevent cervical cancer.

Through a combination of educational content series, media initiatives and social media engagements, Hologic worked to educate and motivate women to prioritize testing for this preventable disease.

Several of the month’s activities served as an extension of the Cerving Confidence initiative, an ongoing collaboration with the Black Women’s Health Imperative and Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Ciara that encourages Black women to commit to self-care and get screened for cervical cancer. As part of the campaign, Ciara appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Jan. 25 to discuss the importance of prioritizing self-care and scheduling regular Pap tests.

Later in the month Ciara expanded on her message through a letter published in NBC THINK that invited Black women to “champion a new narrative” when it comes to cervical cancer. In the letter, Ciara invited women to see self-care beyond “just spa days, me-time and trips to the makeup counter” but as a prioritization of physical and mental health. She also shared how witnessing a member of her team win her battle against cervical cancer inspired her to become an ambassador for the Cerving Confidence initiative.

Additional CHAM highlights:

  • Dr. Jessica Shepherd, OB/GYN, joined FOX daytime talk show The Real to discuss the importance of co-testing with Pap + HPV together and building a strong relationship with your OB/GYN.
  • Mindy Hylton, a cervical cancer survivor and women’s health advocate, shared her diagnosis story with Katie Couric Media to prompt women not to delay their regular screening appointments. Dr. Shepherd also shared her perspective and screening advice as part of the article.
  • The Own Your Health content series in partnership with the Oprah Winfrey Network featured an interview with Hologic’s Michelle Garsha and journalist Adrienne Bankert on cervical cancer disparities and the importance of regular testing. Additional content included a video with choreographer Debbie Allen and her daughter, actress/dancer Vivian Nichole Nixon, that encouraged women to pursue conversations with loved ones about cervical health.
  • Hologic supported a webinar from the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health led by Tory Reed, MSN, FNP-C, nurse practitioner. The discussion used real-world data to demonstrate the effectiveness of Pap testing for women 21-29 years of age and Pap + HPV testing for women 30-65 years of age.

These collective efforts demonstrate Hologic’s enduring commitment to the fight against cervical cancer. Regular screening with Pap + HPV leads to early detection that saves women’s lives and puts the global health community one step closer to eradicating this disease.
